The Mighty Mekong

After Chiang Mai we decided to leave Thailand. We crossed the border from Chiang Khong into Huay Xai on the Laos side, where we spent one night at Daauw Homestay, run by Hmong folk. The place seemed perfect. During the chilly nights in Northern Laos (only about 10°C!), they had a fire burning in the evening. Also there were some very friendly cats who quickly found a soft and warm spot near the fire.

We had a private bungalow which came with our own personal rooster.

We really loved the place and would have stayed an extra night, but the rooster decided that we should not sleep after 1 a.m so we decided to stick to the original plan and take a slow boat on the Mekong river towards Luang Prabang.

Cruising the Mighty Mekong like a boss.

The trip lasted two days with the night spent in a small town called Pakbeng.

In the morning clouds were partly covering the surrounding mountains.

The views on the Mekong was so beautiful that the two-day-long trip went past surprisingly quickly.

The Mekong isn't the easiest river, though. Now and then there were some really strong currents and whirlpools that made our captain really earn his money.

Sometimes the landings were quite rough. Here we dropped off some locals in what seemed to be in the middle of nowhere.

Everyone one the boat seemed to enjoy themselves, even our captain who feasted on a nice, cold Beer Lao.
